Bay Area mail theft investigation

Overview

Authorities in the San Francisco Bay Area have arrested two individuals, reportedly on parole, following an investigation into a major mail theft operation. The operation spanned six cities, including Sunnyvale, San Jose, Mountain View, Menlo Park, Sausalito, and Oakland.

Led by the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety and the United States Postal Inspection Service, the investigation resulted in the recovery of over 80 pounds of suspected stolen mail. Searches of two residences yielded burglary tools, U.S. Postal Service mailbox locks, checks, credit cards, and personal information. Suspected methamphetamine was also discovered at one location.

United States Postal Inspector Matthew Norfleet noted that stolen mail is frequently used as a “bartering chip for drugs or cash.” Officials identified cluster mailboxes at apartment and condominium complexes as frequent targets.
