Bayraktar AKINCI UAV testing and export

Overview

In late July 2026, Turkey’s Baykar demonstrated the combat capability of its Bayraktar AKINCI tactical UAV by successfully firing two ASELSAN-developed TOLUN-P precision-guided munitions in a salvo test. Both 250-pound missiles hit a target within 12 metres, confirming the platform’s ability to engage multiple targets quickly and accurately while showcasing the integration flexibility of the UAV for various guided weapons.

Two days later, the Turkish-Malian defense partnership moved from testing to fielding. At a ceremony in Sévaré, Mali’s armed forces received a new batch of Bayraktar AKINCI drones. This delivery, part of Mali’s military modernization effort, follows earlier acquisitions of Bayraktar TB2 drones and an earlier AKINCI shipment in January 2026.

By early August 2026, this third known delivery of the AKINCI model included drones equipped with Roketsan MAM-L laser-guided munitions and MAM-T gliding bombs. These heavy UAVs, capable of carrying up to 1,350 kg of payload, arrive as the Malian military junta faces intensifying security challenges. This includes a significant attack in the Ségou region where the Al-Qaeda-affiliated group Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) killed at least 10 soldiers during an assault on an army camp in San. The acquisition of Turkish equipment follows the withdrawal of French forces and aims to counter offensives by JNIM and Tuareg rebels.
