Beach thefts and safety incidents in Italian coastal regions

Reports of backpack thefts at Italian beaches have emerged in the summer of 2026. In July, local police in Falconara Marittima apprehended two suspects, a minor and a 20-year-old, after they stole a tourist’s backpack from under an umbrella. The stolen property was recovered and returned to the victim. In August, an attempted robbery occurred at a beach club in Rimini during a volleyball tournament. A lifeguard intervened after observing suspicious behavior, leading to a physical struggle with a suspect. While two accomplices escaped, a 21-year-old man was detained by police and faced charges of attempted improper robbery. By late August, reports indicated broader public order and safety issues across various Italian coastal and lakeside regions. Beyond theft, incidents included a violent brawl on a beach in Mondragone and an assault on a lifeguard in Marina di Carrara after he advised parents to remove children from dangerous currents. Additionally, medical emergencies and drowning prevention advisories were issued in regions such as Lombardy, Senigallia, and Alba Adriatica.
