A study published in the journal ‘PLOS One’ by researchers from the Delft University of Technology has identified The Beatles as the most frequently referenced musical group in scientific publication titles.

Using artificial intelligence to analyze the Scopus database, the research team led by Gabriel Budel identified over 3,000 instances of Beatles-related references, consisting of 2,237 exact song title matches and 963 creative puns or wordplays. These references appear across diverse disciplines, including medicine, social sciences, economics, computer science, and environmental science.

Lead author Gabriel Budel suggests the trend stems from the band’s enduring cultural impact and the linguistic structure of their lyrics. Many song titles utilize short, common vocabulary—such as ‘love’, ‘help’, or ‘friends’—which allows researchers to easily adapt phrases to fit specific scientific topics. Examples of such usage include a Long Covid study titled ‘The lung and winding road’ and a patent law paper referencing ‘Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Patent’.
