Belgian judicial and political integrity controversies
Overview
Political tension has emerged in Belgium following allegations of improper influence and breaches of professional secrecy involving judicial and government officials.
In late September, Julien Moinil, the Prosecutor of the King in Brussels, claimed that an unnamed Brussels Parliament member had contacted him to request the release of a detained individual. While the prosecutor’s office clarified that no criminal offense occurred as no bribe was offered, the incident prompted debates regarding the separation of powers and political ethics. The Brussels Parliament ultimately decided not to summon Moinil for a formal hearing.
By late October, scrutiny shifted toward Justice Minister Annelies Verlinden following the indictment of two spokespeople for violating professional secrecy. The investigation concerns the failed ‘i-Police’ digital reform project, which resulted in approximately 75 million euros in losses. The spokespeople are suspected of attempting to obtain confidential information regarding the investigation into the project’s failure. Meanwhile, federal police are pursuing 244 million euros in damages from the contractor, Sopra Steria.
