Belgium tourism and trade statistics

Recent data provides insights into Belgium’s tourism and trade sectors. During the summer period between late June and late August, US tourists were identified as the largest foreign spenders, accounting for 23.5% of all foreign spending and peaking at 42.7% of foreign payments in Brussels. While Americans led in volume, Austrian tourists had the highest average spending per transaction at €127.

Regarding domestic and international travel trends, Belgian residents recorded 31.2 million overnight trips, with leisure travel making up 94% of the total. France was the most popular international destination. Domestically, the Ardennes and the Belgian coast were the top locations. For international travel, the car was the most common mode of transport, used for 19.1 million trips, while 7.8 million trips were made by plane.

In terms of international trade, Belgium’s imports reached $536.8 billion in 2025, a 3.4% increase from the prior year. The Netherlands was the primary supplier at 19.9%, followed by Germany at 12.2%, France at 10%, and the United States at 7.3%. Approximately 62.8% of all Belgian imports originated from within the European Union.
