Prime Minister John Briceño has initiated several domestic and regional diplomatic efforts. Domestically, the government has moved forward with constitutional reform proposals after an eight-month review by external experts narrowed 167 recommendations from the People’s Constitution Commission down to 53 proposals. The government intends to launch a six-to-eight-month public awareness campaign to educate citizens before any potential referendum. On the regional stage, Prime Minister Briceño met with Honduran President Nasry Asfura in Tegucigalpa to strengthen bilateral relations. A primary objective of the meeting is the potential signing of a commercial exchange agreement to expand economic ties, following similar trade treaties Belize has established with Guatemala and El Salvador. During these high-level talks, Briceño proposed a formal trade agreement to boost local economies and emphasized the need for enhanced security cooperation and information sharing to combat transnational threats, such as drug trafficking. The leaders also discussed improving the movement of goods and people between Central America and the Caribbean while maintaining Belize’s unique Caribbean identity.
