Benevento municipal administration political crisis

Overview

Political instability has escalated in Benevento following investigations into municipal corruption. Initially, opposition members from groups including the Democratic Party, Città Aperta, and AVS announced a boycott of council commissions and conferences. This protest was triggered by the Santamaria investigation, which implicated the President of the City Council, Renato Parente, and municipal employees. Concurrently, the civic committee Benevento Partecipa petitioned for greater transparency, citing difficulties in accessing documentation related to city infrastructure and criticizing the administration’s anti-corruption plan for failing to address vulnerabilities exposed by recent events.

The situation progressed to public demonstrations as opposition coalitions marched to the Prefecture to demand the resignation of Mayor Mastella and his administration. Protesters cited a loss of credibility following judicial developments, alongside grievances regarding public housing, traffic, parking, neighborhood maintenance, and delays in PNRR construction projects.
