Benjamin Franklin High School student death

Overview

On September 30, a student died after falling from a fourth-story building at Benjamin Franklin High School in the Highland Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. Online video footage appeared to show a classroom altercation where one student punched another before the victim fell or jumped from a fourth-floor railing. The incident led to an immediate campus lockdown and the deployment of mental health professionals by the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Following the incident, the Los Angeles County medical examiner’s office ruled the death of 17-year-old Xavier Nungaray-Martinez a suicide. While reports and social media have alleged that bullying contributed to the death, the Los Angeles Police Department stated that detectives have not yet identified evidence establishing a connection between bullying and the incident. In response to the tragedy, parents within the school district have called for the return of police officers to campuses to address security and bullying concerns.
