Berlin bridge renovation program

In late July 2026 Berlin continued its multi‑billion‑euro effort to modernise the city’s bridge network. On 24 July the Senatsverwaltung announced the demolition of the remaining ramps of the Wuhlheide overpass and the removal of a historic snack kiosk, actions framed as part of a broader plan to refurbish or replace around 300 bridges by 2040.

The following day the city detailed a wider rollout: a €2 billion programme covering more than 17 bridge projects, including the replacement of the early‑1900s Wollankstraße railway overpass, widening of the Lange Brücke in Köpenick, merging two Hellersdorf bridges, and constructing a new Rhenania Bridge. Simultaneously, Berlin launched a senior‑housing development (Chaussee Residenz Glienicke) to provide barrier‑free apartments and community services. Together the snapshots show a progression from isolated demolition work to the announcement of a comprehensive upgrade schedule and associated urban‑housing initiatives, underscoring Berlin’s ongoing transformation of its transport infrastructure and public amenities.
