Bhutanese cultural heritage preservation efforts
Overview
Bhutan has undertaken several initiatives to preserve and manage its cultural heritage. In September 2026, museum and cultural heritage professionals from Bhutan and the Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art in New York conducted a three-day knowledge exchange program in Bumthang. Held at the Wangduechhoeling Palace Museum and Cultural Centre, the workshop focused on improving curatorial stewardship, collection management, and the presentation of artifacts for contemporary audiences.
Concurrently, the Jigme Namgyal Museum in Lhuentse, an 18th-century manor, has completed a major restoration. Located in Dungkar village, the four-storey ancestral residence was formerly known as Dungkar Naktshang and served as the seat of Desi Jigme Namgyal, the father of Ugyen Wangchuck, who established Bhutan’s hereditary monarchy. The site now functions as both a museum and a place of worship, preserving the legacy of the Wangchuck Dynasty and the lineage of the Buddhist treasure revealer Pema Lingpa.
The museum features several lhakhangs (shrines), including the Guru Tshokey Dorji shrine and the Kanjur Lhakhang, which preserves sacred Buddhist texts. A newly established heritage gallery displays artifacts dating back over a century, including sacred relics, thangkas, royal edicts, traditional implements, weapons, and personal belongings. While the museum has seen a steady stream of domestic visitors since opening last year, the ground floor remains undeveloped to allow for future expansion. These efforts complement the ongoing maintenance of ancient religious sites across the country, such as the Kyichu Lhakhang and Jampa Lhakhang.
