Bill Gates DOE Q Clearance

Overview

In late July 2026 a Senate hearing revealed that Bill Gates had been issued a Department of Energy “Q” security clearance covering 2014‑2021, a level normally reserved for work on nuclear weapons, national labs and critical energy infrastructure. The disclosure came via a DOE letter entered into the Congressional Record by Sen. Rand Paul and noted that the clearance was granted during the Obama administration.

A few days later additional reporting confirmed the seven‑year span of the clearance and highlighted its overlap with the COVID‑19 pandemic. Reporters noted that Gates’s involvement with TerraPower, an advanced nuclear reactor venture that works with DOE laboratories, could explain the access. The story also mentioned Dr. Anthony Fauci invoking the Fifth Amendment over 100 times during the same hearing. Both the DOE and the Gates Foundation have declined to comment on why a private citizen received such classified access.
