In Andalusia, the development of large-scale biomethane facilities has met significant local and municipal resistance despite some successful implementations. While AGR Biogás successfully inaugurated a facility in La Calahorra, Granada, which processes agro-livestock waste and injects renewable gas into the regional grid, other projects face intense opposition. In the Aljarafe region, the ‘Stop Biogás Aljarafe-Doñana’ platform and several municipal councils councils, including Benacazón, Bollullos de la Mitación, and Aznalcázar, have organized protests and passed motions to reject a proposed macro-biogas plant in Benacazón, Sevilla. Similarly, in Alhendín, the Junta de Andalucía has proposed denying environmental authorization for a biomethane plant led by Greening Solar VIII S. L. This proposal follows an unfavorable urban planning report and widespread contestation from residents and groups such as Ecologistas en Acción, who argue the facility is incompatible with the local landscape. A final administrative resolution remains pending. Opposition has also emerged in Alfambra, where the ‘STOP Biogás Alfambra’ neighborhood association held sessions to contest a proposed macro-plant. Residents expressed concerns regarding the facility’s scale, proximity to urban centers and water resources like the Sabucar spring, and potential increases in heavy vehicle traffic. The association clarified that their opposition targets the specific location and characteristics of the project rather than renewable energy technology itself, noting that the plant could jeopardize other local developments such as a new senior residence.
