BioNTech lung cancer clinical trial developments

Overview

BioNTech has reported positive results from clinical trials targeting lung cancer. In the Phase 3 PRESERVE-003 study, the experimental antibody Gotistobart (BNT316/ONC-392), developed with U.S.-based OncoC4, showed a median overall survival of 18.5 months for patients with metastatic squamous non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). This nearly doubled the 10-month median survival seen in the control group receiving standard Docetaxel chemotherapy.

Gotistobart functions by targeting the CTLA-4 immune receptor to reduce regulatory T-cells that suppress immune responses against tumors. Further data presented at a lung cancer congress also highlighted positive Phase 1/2 results for a combination of Pumitamig and Elfetabart in treating advanced small cell lung cancer.

While some observers have characterized the findings as a potential breakthrough, researchers noted that the studies remain in relatively early stages and require successful completion of ongoing trial phases to secure regulatory approval. Financial analysts from institutions including UBS, Jefferies, and Berenberg responded positively to the data, with several maintaining or raising buy recommendations and price targets for BioNTech.
