BitMart exchange shutdown

Entities: BMX token · BitMEX · BitMart · Natan Chow (global CEO of BitMart) · August 26, 2026

Overview

In late July 2026 BitMart announced an orderly wind‑down of its cryptocurrency exchange. New user registrations, deposits and order placement were halted on 26 July, with spot and futures trading scheduled to stop on 26 August and the platform to cease all operations on 31 January 2027. Withdrawals will remain possible until the final closure date.

The shutdown triggered a sharp decline in BitMart’s native token, BMX, which fell 60‑80 % from its pre‑announcement level, reaching between $0.05 and $0.09. On‑chain data showed a marked slowdown in withdrawals, with only a handful of wallets moving roughly $805 000 in a 24‑hour window and a period of no withdrawals at all. Assets held in BitMart‑linked wallets dropped from about $102 million earlier in July to roughly $71 million on the day of the notice.

The closure follows the recent winding‑down of fellow exchange BitMEX and reflects a broader consolidation trend in the crypto‑exchange sector, driven by reduced trading volumes, higher compliance costs and competition from larger platforms. Users reported delays in withdrawing large ETH and stablecoin balances, prompting analytics firms such as Nansen and Lookonchain to flag reduced liquidity.

Despite the abrupt exit, BitMart cited an assessment of operating conditions and market environment as the reason for the decision, without pinpointing a specific regulatory trigger. Earlier in the week the firm secured an Australian Financial Services License and reported a 256 % rise in assets under management for its asset‑management arm.
