Bizum mobile wallet rollout in Spain

Overview

In mid‑July 2026 Bizum introduced Bizum Pay, a digital wallet that lets Spanish users make in‑store NFC payments directly from their bank accounts. The service launched on 14 July and was immediately compatible with roughly 60 % of Spain’s point‑of‑sale terminals—over one‑million devices—allowing merchants to activate it simply through their banks. Bizum aims to have the majority of its 32 million users able to pay with Bizum Pay by year‑end and eventually cover all terminals.

A few weeks later the company announced the rollout would let customers confirm purchases from their banking app, offering a card‑free alternative to Visa and Mastercard. The expansion is presented as a way to broaden payment options for Spanish consumers and reduce reliance on international card networks, while giving merchants a popular, mobile‑first payment method.
