BLIK mobile payment system evolution and regulation

The BLIK mobile payment system has expanded its service offerings in Poland, evolving from a six-digit code system into a comprehensive solution for online payments, ATM withdrawals, and contactless transactions. In the iGaming and online gambling sectors, the system provides real-time transactions and immediate refunds.

To support regulatory enforcement, the system is implementing a new mechanism starting in September to automatically reject transactions directed toward illegal gambling websites. Developed by Polski Standard Płatności, this feature will cross-reference destinations against a blacklist of prohibited domains maintained by the Polish Ministry of Finance to combat the grey market.

As a central component of the Polish e-commerce and iGaming sectors, BLIK offers rapid mobile payment capabilities, including phone transfers. While primarily designed for the Polish market, its functionality can extend internationally if merchants support the method. In the online gaming sector, the system is noted for near-instantaneous deposits and withdrawals. Platforms such as Flappy Casino and SpinGreen have integrated the system to cater to the Polish market with options like slots, roulette, and sports betting.

However, experts emphasize the necessity of responsible gaming, advising users to set strict budget limits and verify that operators comply with licensing and anti-money laundering (AML) requirements. Due to the speed of BLIK transactions, players are encouraged to monitor their spending through banking history to mitigate financial risks.

BLIK is now pursuing international expansion. Following its September 2024 debut at Tatra Banka, mBank Slovakia has begun implementing the service within its mobile application, with full availability for customers expected by October 1. Polski Standard Płatności aims to build a comprehensive Slovakian system modeled after the Polish market through widespread banking cooperation, with plans to introduce the service to Romania following the Slovakian rollout.
