Blue Economy initiatives in Macaé, Brazil
Overview
The municipality of Macaé has initiated the process to become the first Brazilian city to receive the ‘Selo Azul Cidades Costeiras’ (Blue City Coastal Seal) certification. Created by the Federation of Commercial and Business Associations of the State of Rio de Janeiro (FACERJ), the program evaluates 20 criteria spanning environmental, economic, and governance sectors to ensure marine resource protection alongside economic growth.
Following the establishment of a Blue Governance Committee, Macaé has expanded its focus on the Blue Economy. During Rio Innovation Week, the city presented strategies for economic diversification, specifically targeting sustainable fishing, nautical tourism, and the offshore market. These efforts aim to integrate the protection of its 23 kilometers of coastline with broader economic development.
