BMW completed has expanded its $1.7 bn vehicle portfolio and manufacturing capabilities, highlighted by the global launch of the fifth-generation X5 (G65). Following the $1.7bn expansion of its South Carolina plant expansion on 5 July 2026, linking facilities, BMW completed the integration of the Spartanburg and the new Woodruff facility plants. This allows Spartanburg to build produce the fifth‑generation X5 (G65) and with five powertrain options: gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid, the first U.S‑built iX5 fully electric SUV. From December 2026 the Woodruff plant will start series production of Gen6 high‑voltage batteries for the iX5, using AI‑driven processes, digital twins X5 and VR training, with 300 staff, 250 robots iX5, featuring an extended 3,165 mm wheelbase and renewable electricity powering the site, including hydrogen‑fuelled forklifts.
