Bogotá organic waste management initiatives

Overview

The Bogotá District Secretary of Environment (SDA) has introduced recommendations for households to separate organic waste to alleviate pressure on the Doña Juana landfill. Reports indicated the site received 6,769 tons of garbage daily during the first quarter of 2026, with food and garden waste comprising approximately 65% of the buried material.

To address this, the district is promoting home composting, community management, and the use of ‘pacas digestoras’ (digester bales) to produce fertilizer. Additionally, the ReGenera initiative has processed 8,417 tons of organic waste into fertilizer since February 2024, a process that has reportedly prevented the emission of 2,550 tons of CO2 equivalent.
