Bolivia security measures against organized crime
Overview
The Bolivian government has initiated a series of regulatory and strategic measures to combat narcoterrorism, transnational organized crime, and extortion. Initially, the Supreme Defense Council (Cosdep) approved four regulatory frameworks, including a new Law of Security and Defense and the establishment of a national intelligence system. These reforms allow for the temporary, controlled participation of the Armed Forces in operations to address the advanced logistics and violence of criminal organizations.
Following these regulatory changes, the government introduced the ‘Frontera Segura 2.0’ plan. This initiative involves the deployment of police officers to Santa Cruz and the planned creation of two ‘super elite’ units in high-incidence areas such as Beni and the San Ignacio de Velasco-San Matías corridor. These units are intended to utilize advanced technology, including drones and artificial intelligence. The strategy also incorporates international cooperation with the United Nations, the European Union, and the United States to strengthen state presence in strategic border zones.
