Bolivian drought and livestock crisis

Overview

A severe drought in Bolivia has escalated from localized impacts in Pasorapa to a widespread national crisis. Initially, the drought in Pasorapa caused significant livestock losses and threatened the livelihoods of approximately 1,500 residents due to dried-up water reservoirs and forage shortages. Local authorities reported that cattle were dying or becoming injured while searching for water in dried lagoons, and the municipality struggled to provide relief due to malfunctioning water tankers.

The situation has since expanded significantly. According to Civil Defense Vice Minister Roberto Rivero, the drought now affects more than 78,217 families across six departments, including Oruro, La Paz, Chuquisaca, Cochabamba, Santa Cruz, and Potosí. The crisis has resulted in the loss of over 75,000 head of livestock, with approximately 917,447 people impacted by various climatic factors.

Driven by El Niño, the drought continues to impact these regions, with authorities preparing for potential flooding risks between November and February.
