Bolivian economic and debt management
Overview
Bolivia is pursuing various measures to address its fiscal and external economic imbalances. In August 2026, Brazil’s Economic Affairs Commission ratified a debt restructuring agreement with Bolivia, forgiving approximately 95.73% of US$ 50.8 million in debt stemming from unpaid commitments dating back to the 1980s. As part of the settlement, Bolivia provided Brazil with a property in the Multicentro Building to cover a portion of the remaining balance.
By September 2026, the Bolivian Executive branch submitted a bill to the Plurinational Legislative Assembly to support a $1.9 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This loan, consisting of 1,369 special drawing rights, is intended to support economic stability and address persistent fiscal issues.
