Overview

June 2026 saw public outcry over steep ticket‑price hikes by state airline Boliviana de Aviación (BoA), prompting a rebuke from Senator Marcela Guerrero and a telecoms‑authority explanation linking the hikes to variable costs and layovers.

In early July the government unveiled a fleet‑renewal programme for BoA’s 20‑aircraft fleet—only half of which were operable—and rejected privatisation proposals. Public Works Minister Mauricio Zamora visited Embraer’s plant in Brazil to negotiate new regional jets, stressing modernisation and restored public confidence.

On 8 July BoA’s general manager Eduardo Valdivia was dismissed after a scandal over allegedly subsidised first‑class tickets for a U.S. World Cup trip. An interim manager was installed and the ministry announced an open recruitment for a permanent chief executive.

Santa Cruz Governor Juan Pablo Velasco, on 13 July, urged a private owner to acquire BoA, arguing that investment would modernise the carrier, end annual losses and create jobs, contrasting with the national government’s stance.

By 28 July Minister Zamora defended the appointment of veteran aviator Estanislao Finfera as BoA’s new general manager, noting no pending legal issues. Finfera reported that only about ten of an estimated 15‑17 aircraft are airworthy; a Boeing 767 is dismantled and another leased plane has been stranded in Mexico for over a year while lease payments continue. The reduced fleet has caused frequent delays and cancellations. He pledged a comprehensive diagnostic report in the first half of August to pinpoint operational, financial and administrative failures and propose corrective measures.
