Bolivian pharmaceutical industry regulatory challenges

The Bolivian Chamber of the Pharmaceutical Industry (CIFABOL) has raised several concerns regarding regulatory and administrative challenges facing the national pharmaceutical sector.

In July 2026, CIFABOL demanded the urgent restoration of Agemed’s digital transaction platform, which had been non-functional since early June following a change in agency leadership. The outage forced companies to use manual, in-person procedures, leading to long queues and concerns regarding data security and drug production stability. The association criticized the government for implementing “improvised measures that have not been efficient.”

By August 2026, the industry declared a state of alert due to its exclusion from technical discussions regarding the Ministry of Health and Sports’ General Health Plan 2026–2030. CIFABOL warned that proposed shifts—such as consolidating strategic acquisitions and facilitating direct international imports—could undermine health sovereignty and increase dependence on foreign medicines. The industry has requested an urgent meeting with the Ministry of Health to ensure national production is prioritized in the final planning documents.
