Boohoo fine for deceptive practices in France
Overview
French regulators, specifically the DGCCRF, fined British online retailer Boohoo €2.33 million for deceptive commercial practices and labeling violations.
An investigation into the company’s French website revealed that between October 2023 and February 2024, 95% of examined promotions were non-compliant. Findings indicated that 40% of sale advertisements offered no actual price reduction, 7% provided smaller discounts than advertised, and 48% involved price increases. The company was also sanctioned for using prohibited terms such as ‘leather’, ‘faux leather’, or ‘suede’ to describe synthetic products.
Boohoo accepted the fine as part of a negotiated criminal settlement with the Paris Prosecutor's Office. The company noted that the issues occurred before the current management team took over and stated that necessary corrections have since been implemented.
