Bosnia and Herzegovina EU integration and economic risks

Bosnia and Herzegovina is navigating complex economic and political challenges related to its relationship with the European Union. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned of significant economic risks stemming from the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). Approximately 10.7 percent of the nation’s exports—roughly 3.2 percent of its GDP—are exposed to this mechanism, particularly in carbon-intensive sectors like electricity, steel, and cement. This vulnerability is compounded by domestic energy trends, including declining coal and electricity production.

In response to these economic ties, the country is actively advancing its European integration efforts. The Council of Ministers recently adopted a report detailing government measures taken to progress toward EU membership. Foreign Minister Elmedin Konaković underscored the importance of this integration, noting that the EU is the country’s primary economic partner, receiving 73 percent of its exports. Konaković stated that integration is essential to overcome internal political blockades and to counter regional influences from the “Russian-Iranian-Chinese bloc.”
