Bosnia war anniversary commemorations

In July 2026 Bosnia and Herzegovina continued its pattern of marking key dates from the 1990s conflict. A mass‑burial ceremony in Vogošća on 4 July commemorated the 34th anniversary of the 1992 killing of 30 Bosniak civilians, while Sarajevo observed the 33rd anniversary of the heaviest one‑day artillery barrage of the siege, recalling the 3,777 shells fired and the ICTY convictions of senior Bosnian‑Serb leaders.

On 25 July families gathered in Zecovi and the nearby village of Briševo to mark the 34th anniversary of the Zecovi massacre (about 69 Bosniak civilians) and the Briševo massacre (at least 61 Croat civilians). Survivors described extreme brutality, including rape and mutilation. Court actions were highlighted, with several perpetrators already sentenced and many remains still missing.

The commemorations on 24–25 July also emphasized the ongoing war‑crime prosecutions. The Bosnian‑Herzegovinian Prosecutor’s Office has charged five former Bosnian‑Serb commanders—Veljko Brajić, Slobodan Taranjac, Ranko Kaurin, Branko Dženopoljac and Draško Topić—with crimes against humanity. The Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina confirmed the indictment in March 2024, and some of the defendants have already received prison terms for related atrocities in Zecovi and other villages. Families continue to demand the recovery of missing remains and full accountability, keeping the memory of the war alive as a call for truth and justice.
