Boxer store shooting in Eshowe

Overview

On 10 October, three female managers—the bakery, store, and administration managers—were shot and killed during a disciplinary hearing at a Boxer grocery store in Eshowe, KwaZulu-Natal. Police reports indicate the suspect, a former bakery employee, allegedly locked the victims in an office before returning with a firearm to carry out the attack. One victim was identified as Thandiwe Chili, an employee of 20 years.

Following the incident, the ANC Women's League condemned the killings as a “brutal attack on defenseless women” and renewed calls for a referendum on the death penalty to combat femicide. Employment and Labour Minister Nomakhosazana Meth also condemned the shooting, stating that no individual should fear for their safety while performing professional duties. The Department of Employment and Labour has since urged employers to strengthen Employee Wellness Programmes and encourage constructive dialogue to resolve grievances.

As of the latest reports, the suspect remains at large and law enforcement has launched a manhunt.
