BPOM regulation of adulterated herbal products
Overview
The Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) identified a new chemical substance, pyrimidenafil, in three male stamina herbal products: Exie, Yubokki, and Duramax. Produced by PT Bintang Kupu-Kupu, these products contained the compound, which acts as a phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitor similar to sildenafil. Officials noted that using this previously unidentified compound may be a tactic to evade regulatory testing.
Following these findings, BPOM revoked the distribution permits for the three products. Authorities observed that the use of pyrimidenafil represents a shift in tactics by producers attempting to evade detection by using chemical derivatives with different structures than common substances. In broader surveillance, BPOM identified dozens of other illegal natural medicines and supplements containing various hazardous substances, including sildenafil, sibutramine, dexamethasone, and paracetamol, some of which used falsified distribution permit numbers.
