Bpost and PostNL logistics and management developments

Bpost, the Belgian state-owned postal service, has faced significant financial and management difficulties. These challenges include unsuccessful international acquisitions, such as the American e-commerce firm Radial, the loss of its newspaper contract, and issues regarding improper state aid. The company has also experienced internal tensions, including strikes and protests from its 33,000 employees.

In response to shifting market demands, characterized by a 14 percent decrease in letter mail and record-high parcel volumes, Bpost and PostNL are expanding their logistics infrastructure in Belgium. PostNL has launched its first automated parcel locker in Mechelen, initiating a nationwide expansion of 24/7 hubs designed to reduce failed home deliveries and CO2 emissions.

Bpost is also investing heavily in parcel logistics, recently opening a 7,930-square-meter distribution center in Maldegem. This facility includes 44 electric vehicle charging points and supports the delivery of approximately 3,000 parcels daily across the Maldegem, Aalter, and Sint-Laureins regions.

While these developments aim to improve delivery control, observers note a growing fragmentation in Belgian logistics infrastructure. While Bpost already operates over 2,500 Bbox lockers, PostNL is building its own separate network. This creates a logistical paradox where shipments are bundled, but the physical infrastructure remains divided.
