BR-135 bridge demolition in Maranhão

Overview

The National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT) successfully executed the controlled implosion of the Marcelino Machado Bridge, also known as the Estreito dos Mosquitos bridge, on November 1, 2026. The 459 meter structure, originally built in 1960, required demolition due to severe structural issues such as cracks, oxidation, and concrete displacement.

To facilitate the operation, authorities implemented a total blockade of the BR-135 highway between 10:00 and 16:00 at km 22 near São Luís and km 40 in Bacabeira. Safety protocols included a 350 meter isolation radius and the preventive relocation of 103 families living near the site. The Civil Defense also issued emergency alerts via SMS. The demolition was timed to coincide with high tide to help cushion the impact of debris on the seabed. While the operation was extensive, the Caema sanitation company confirmed that the water supply for São Luís remained unaffected.

A reconstruction project managed by the Consórcio Ponte Estreito Maranhão has been authorized with an estimated investment of R$ 176.7 million. The new bridge is designed to support up to 45 tons, an increase from the previous 24 ton limit, and is expected to be completed by 2027.
