Brazil Amazon fire and deforestation decline continues
Entities: Brazil · Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE) · Feijó · Acre (state of Brazil)
Overview
The 2025 fire season continued the sharp downturn in Brazil’s Amazon and nationwide burned area. Satellite monitoring by MapBiomas recorded only about 3.1 million ha burned in the Amazon – an 80 % drop from 2024 and the lowest extent since systematic observations began in the mid‑1980s. Total burned area across Brazil fell to 12.7 million ha, roughly half the 2024 total and the lowest nationwide figure since 2018. Analysts attribute the decline to unusually high rainfall after two drought years, which raised water‑covered surfaces 2.6 % above historic norms, and to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s expanded anti‑deforestation programme that added funding, fire‑fighting aircraft and stricter police investigations, curbing intentional burns on private farms. Private agricultural land still accounted for just over 49 % of all burned area over four decades. The Cerrado remained the most affected biome (≈8.7 million ha burned), while the Pantanal showed the greatest proportional reduction and the Caatinga stayed near its historical mean. Mato Grosso recorded the highest state total (45.1 million ha), with Pará and Maranhão together contributing nearly half of the national total. About 64 % of the burned land has burned repeatedly, especially in the Cerrado. Ecological research in the Cerrado shows fire timing does not alter ant species richness but does affect functional diversity, underscoring calls for preserving unburned refuges and lengthening fire intervals. New analysis links the 2025 decline also to a La Niña‑driven cooler, wetter climate, a delayed rainy season that shortened the slash‑and‑burn window, and heightened community detection and rapid response following the severe 2024 fires. Scientists caution that a single low‑fire year does not guarantee a lasting trend, warning that future climate extremes such as a possible “Super‑El Niño” could reverse the gains, and noting the political salience of the results for Lula’s re‑election campaign.
