Brazil Amazon soy moratorium crisis

A July 16 study warned that ending Brazil's voluntary Amazon soy moratorium could trigger an extra 1.4 million hectares of deforestation over the next decade, adding roughly 745 million tonnes of CO₂ and undoing a 35 % reduction achieved since 2008. Legal challenges were already pending, with the Brazilian Association of Vegetable Oil Industries withdrawing from the pact and several lawsuits awaiting Supreme Court rulings.

By the end of July, the situation had intensified. Record fires in 2024 were linked to expanding soy, gold and beef operations, and a new documentary highlighted illegal logging and organized crime. Major grain traders such as Cargill, Bunge and ADM were withdrawing from the moratorium, raising fears that up to 9.2 million hectares could be opened to deforestation. The moratorium’s future remained contested in the Supreme Court after a Mato Grosso law protecting it was temporarily suspended, threatening Brazil’s zero‑deforestation pledge for 2030.
