Brazil Anatel telecom policy consultations
Overview
In late July 2026 Brazil’s National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) advanced two parallel regulatory initiatives. On 27 July, Anatel extended the deadline for its public consultation on machine‑to‑machine (M2M) and Internet of Things (IoT) markets to 13 September, citing the technical complexity raised by industry participants. A technical workshop was scheduled for 13 August to gather detailed input on device connectivity, smart‑city applications, vehicular and financial services, and other IoT uses, with the aim of informing future rules for Brazil’s IoT ecosystem.
The following day, Anatel announced the completion of its study of the 6 GHz spectrum and opened a new public consultation on how to allocate the band’s lower 500 MHz portion for outdoor Wi‑Fi. The agency proposed splitting the 6 GHz band, reserving the upper 700 MHz for Mobile Personal Service and dedicating the lower half to unlicensed Wi‑Fi, while postponing the slated 2026 spectrum auction to 2028. Stakeholders were invited to contribute technical evidence and market perspectives, with reference to international models from the United States, Canada, Costa Rica and the United Kingdom. Industry groups and the GSMA expressed support for the split, highlighting potential gigabit‑per‑second service growth and broader coverage.
Together, these steps illustrate Anstel’s coordinated effort to shape Brazil’s telecom landscape by soliciting detailed industry feedback on both emerging IoT services and spectrum allocation for outdoor wireless connectivity.
