Overview

The movement that began with coordinated July 2024 marches in major Brazilian cities has continued to evolve. After the large public demonstrations, March 2025 saw localized actions such as the Volta Redonda “Celebrating Black Women” event and the Salvador police mut‑day that provided legal assistance to Black women facing discrimination.

In July–August 2026 the campaign entered a phase of nationwide commemorations and honors. Volta Redonda’s municipal Secretariat for Women’s Policies hosted a debate titled “Celebrando Mulheres Negras,” featuring quilombola leaders and cultural performances. Salvador held its fifth‑edition “Mulheres Negras Movem o Mundo” ceremony, recognizing 50 municipal employees and renaming Casa da Igualdade Racial rooms after Lélia Gonzalez and Ivone Lara. Paraíba marked the 15th anniversary of its “Agosto Negro” seminar with university panels and a launch by rapper Nego Marley. The national “Julho das Pretas” campaign highlighted that Black people account for 83 % of police‑related fatalities and called for broader reparations. A historic gathering of about 300 000 Black women in Brasília for the Global March of Black Women for Reparations and Good Living underscored the movement’s scale and its push for policy and cultural change across Brazil.
