Brazil digital infrastructure and connectivity expansion

The Brazilian Ministry of Communications is advancing several initiatives to strengthen national digital infrastructure and connectivity.

Initial efforts focused on the ‘Norte Conectado’ program, which seeks to expand internet access in the Amazon region through the installation of subfluvial fiber optic cables. This project provides a secondary connectivity layer for remote areas where geography makes traditional infrastructure difficult. Concurrently, the ministry proposed structural changes for 2027 to include ‘digital infrastructure’ and ‘cybersecurity’ in its name, alongside the development of new regulatory frameworks for artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.

Building on these infrastructure goals, the federal government has entered an assisted operation phase for a private mobile network. This one-year testing phase aims to ensure secure and resilient communications for critical public services. Additionally, the government is expanding its private fixed network to connect over 40 strategic public administration buildings across various cities, including Vitória, Rio Branco, Macapá, and Goiânia. These developments are being implemented as part of obligations related to the 5G auction and are supervised by the Ministry of Communications and Anatel.
