Brazil disaster monitoring and flood prevention efforts
Overview
Efforts to mitigate flood and landslide risks in Brazil are advancing through technological initiatives and infrastructure expansion. In Pernambuco, the state government launched the ‘Cientista Arretado’ Program to develop scientific solutions for geotechnical and hydrometeorological monitoring. This initiative, part of the ‘Inova Pernambuco’ program, aims to integrate data to support decision-making for civil protection agencies.
Simultaneously, the National Center for Monitoring and Natural Disaster Alerts (Cemaden) is expanding its monitoring network. In Acre, 34 new automatic rain gauges have been installed across 13 municipalities to provide real-time rainfall data, particularly to manage risks associated with El Niño. Additionally, local authorities in Pará de Minas have deployed three automatic rain gauges to monitor rainfall levels across different urban sectors and issue preventive alerts for high-risk areas.
