Brazil Enem exam accessibility initiatives

Overview

Efforts to increase accessibility for students participating in Brazil’s National High School Exam (Enem) have expanded through both educational and municipal initiatives.

The Ministry of Education (MEC) provides a hospital classroom option for approximately 50 candidates annually who require long-term treatment or isolation, such as those undergoing cancer treatment or transplants. This service allows students to take the exam in a hospital setting with specialized accommodations, including scribes, readers, and extra time, provided they submit medical documentation and hospitals confirm facility availability.

In Rio de Janeiro, Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere announced free municipal public transportation for approximately 150,000 students during the November 2026 exam dates. Following negotiations with student movements, the city will provide a R$ 10 credit via the JaÉ ticketing system app for each exam Sunday. This R$ 3 million investment aims to reduce educational inequality by removing urban mobility barriers for low-income students.
