Brazil energy sector auctions
Overview
Brazil has conducted significant auctions within its energy sector. In October 2026, the state-run firm PPSA completed its first auction for the direct sale of federal natural gas to end consumers. This auction, involving 110 lots, was expected to generate approximately 376 million to 377 million reais for the public treasury and aimed to reduce industrial energy costs. Reported price reductions for sectors such as fertilizer, ceramics, and mining reached as high as 57 percent.
In November 2026, an energy transmission concession auction organized by the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) at the B3 exchange resulted in an average discount of 50 percent across eight projects. These projects involve an estimated capital expenditure of R$ 8.9 billion and cover 1,866 kilometers of lines across seven states: Bahia, Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraíba, Paraná, Rondônia, and São Paulo. The bidding process was dominated by Spanish-backed capital, with firms such as Neoenergia, Cymi, Celeo Redes, and EDP securing multiple projects.
The contracts are set for a 30-year duration, with construction timelines ranging from 42 to 60 months. In Goiás, specifically, R$ 349.5 million will be invested to strengthen electrical infrastructure, including R$ 316.9 million for new structures in the northeast of the state awarded to EDP Transmissão Goiás S.A. The auction occurred during a period of financial market volatility, leading to industry concerns regarding interest rates and long-term project financing.
