Brazil environmental protection in Amazonas

Overview

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva signed decrees to establish four new sustainable development reserves (RDS) in the state of Amazonas, Brazil. Covering approximately 668,000 to 669,000 hectares, these reserves—named Tupana, Igapó-Açu I, Igapó-Açu II, Canaã, and Mirari—are situated along the BR-319 highway corridor.

The initiative aims to protect biodiversity and carbon stocks while allowing local populations, including extractivists and riverine communities, to utilize natural resources through sustainable management. Environment Minister João Paulo Capobianco described the measure as a “fundamental step toward strengthening protection in the BR-319 region” to reduce deforestation from irregular economic activities.

Related environmental actions included the expansion of the Sete Cidades National Park in Piauí and the signing of 40-year forest management concession contracts for the Humaitá National Forest. Additionally, R$ 50.5 million from the Amazon Fund was allocated to the Naturezas Quilombolas project to support territorial management for quilombola communities in the Legal Amazon.
