Brazil expands SUS with robotic and ophthalmic surgery

Overview

The Brazilian Ministry of Health has officially incorporated a new surgical technique into the Unified Health System (SUS) that allows for the simultaneous treatment of glaucoma and cataracts. This procedure, approved by the National Commission for the Incorporation of Technologies in SUS (Conitec), is designed for mild to moderate cases of primary open-angle glaucoma.

The technique offers a less invasive approach to clearing the ocular drainage canal and removing the lens in a single intervention, which is expected to provide faster recovery and improved intraocular pressure control. The Ministry has up to 180 days to implement the procedure within the public health network.

In September 2026, the expansion of advanced surgical technologies was highlighted by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Health Minister Alexandre Padilha. Alongside the rollout of the combined eye procedure, the federal government announced R$ 50 million to fund robotic prostate operations, aiming to establish robotic surgery centers in every state to reduce regional disparities.

Following these developments, Instituto Visão para Todos has begun introducing the combined glaucoma and cataract surgery through the SUS in Paraíba. Under the presidency of Tarcízio Filho, the institution is implementing the procedure across more than 60 municipalities to modernize clinical protocols and improve aqueous humor drainage and pressure control for patients in the state.
