Brazil higher education and vocational systems

Overview

Brazil’s educational landscape involves various pathways for student advancement and quality oversight. Admission to higher education is managed through the ‘vestibular’, which consists of institution-specific exams, and the Unified Selection System (Sisu), which utilizes National High School Exam (Enem) scores to allocate vacancies in public universities.

Regarding the 2026 Enem, Inep has confirmed 5,051,345 registered participants, with women making up 63.98% of applicants. The exam is scheduled for November 8 and 15. To support students in the final stages of study, preparatory initiatives have emerged, including free live review sessions in Mato Grosso do Sul and large-scale workshops in Tocantins and São Paulo.

To complement these processes, the Ministry of Education (MEC) has introduced the National System for the Evaluation of Professional and Technological Education (Sinaept). Implemented via Ordinance No. 545, this system assesses the quality of vocational courses through five dimensions, including training conditions, student achievement, and alignment with labor market demands, with a gradual implementation prioritizing technical secondary education.

In medical education assessment, Inep recently released the preliminary answer key for the 2026 reapplication of the National Medical Education Assessment (Enamed). This reapplication, held on October 18, 2026, was for candidates who missed the original September session due to documented logistical issues or infectious diseases. Candidates may file appeals against the preliminary key through October 22.
