In late July 2026, the municipality of Lauro de Freitas in Bahia partnered with UNEB to launch a selective process for 19 seats, reviving a dormant university pole. This was followed by a nationwide drive where dozens of municipalities, federal institutes, and state universities announced thousands of new admission slots for the 2026–2027 academic year. Major rollouts included Unicamp, which introduced International Relations and Artificial Intelligence & Data Science programmes, and Unicentro, which opened 1,154 places. Other significant expansions included UNEMAT, IFPA, IFMG, and IFMT’s largest-ever selection of 3,815 seats. By early August, the expansion of higher education through the Ministry of Education’s ‘Universidades Transformadoras’ programme continued. The Federal University of Southern Bahia (UFSB) received approval for 11 undergraduate courses, creating 320 student slots and 96 professor positions. The Federal University of Acre (UFAC) also expanded its interior presence, while Ufersa and the Federal University of Fronteira Sul (UFFS) secured approvals for numerous new courses to be implemented through 2029. In mid-to-late August, Ufersa announced ten new courses starting in March 2027 across its Mossoró, Angicos, Caraúbas, and Pau dos Ferros campuses. UFFS secured approval for 20 new proposals across six campuses. By late August, UFAC planned to formalize a request for a Psychology course at its Campus Floresta to address regional demands. UFFS aimed to introduce Psychology, Law, and Biotechnology at its Realeza Campus, targeting a 2027 or 2028 start. Additionally, through Ordinance Seres/MEC nº 409/2026, the Ministry of Education authorized new courses at four federal universities to promote access in the interior. This includes 100 law vacancies at Ufop’s Ipatinga Campus, 54 law vacancies at UFFS’s Laranjeiras do Sul Campus, 200 pedagogy vacancies at Ufpi in Floriano, and three new courses at Unir in Ji-Paraná, Presidente Médici, and Cacoal.
