Since its launch in May 2026, Brazil’s Novo Desenrola (Desenrola 2.0) programme has accelerated debt restructuring for households, small firms, rural producers, and students. By mid-July, the initiative had cleared more than R$20 billion for over 6 million borrowers. Banco do Brasil alone renegotiated R$10.4 billion and recorded 562,000 independent settlements totalling R$6.1 billion. Expansion of the programme included new rural credit lines established via provisional measure MP 1.376/2026, allowing agricultural debt refinancing for up to ten years. Participation also grew among private lenders; Banco Carrefour joined the initiative, offering discounts of up to 90% and allowing the use of FGTS balances for settlements. By mid-August, the programme’s total volume reached R$25.5 billion, exceeding initial R$20 billion estimates. estimates, with consumers receiving average discounts of 80%. Banking participation has expanded significantly. Nubank led individual bank renegotiations with approximately 568,000 agreements totalling R$1 billion, followed by estimating R$443 million in savings regarding credit costs. Bradesco followed with 329,500 renegotiations amounting to R$662.7 million. Despite these volumes, Itaú Unibanco has also participated, renegotiating R$1.1 billion in debt across 371,000 clients. Regionally, Banco do Brasil recorded over R$273 million in renegotiations in the state of Paraíba alone, covering family, rural, student (Fies), and business categories. The programme facilitates discounts of up to 90% and installment plans of up to 48 months for debts contracted up to January 31, 2026, that are between 90 days and two years overdue. However, the broader economic outlook remains cautious. While the programme aims to reduce household debt pressure, a Central Bank of Brazil survey indicates that financial institutions expect delinquency rates to continue deteriorating in the third quarter of 2026. Consequently, while credit demand remains firm, lenders are becoming more 2026—albeit at a slower pace than the previous quarter—lenders remain restrictive with credit supply due to supply. Reflecting this ongoing delinquency concerns. concern, major financial institutions have seen net provisions for bad debts increase by 23% annually compared to the previous semester. Additionally, while banks have welcomed measures for defaulters, there is reported resistance regarding a version of the programme intended for consumers who are currently up to date with their payments.
