Brazil industrial and trade policy development

Brazil is pursuing domestic industrialization and expanded trade partnerships, particularly regarding mineral resources. The Brazilian Congress has advanced legislative measures, including the Fertilizer Industry Development Program (Profert), to boost the production of critical minerals and fertilizers to reduce international market dependence.

To secure the 2026/27 grain harvest amid geopolitical maritime disruptions, the federal government has also prioritized the unloading of imported fertilizers at public ports.

In a parallel effort to broaden trading relationships, Brazil and South Africa have engaged in the 8th Session of the South Africa-Brazil Joint Commission and a dedicated business forum. Officials are focusing on leveraging mineral wealth to drive industrialization, technological exchange, and green energy transitions. Key areas of collaboration include aerospace, defense, biopharmaceuticals, and agriculture.

Beyond industrial ties, the two nations are exploring educational and agricultural cooperation, highlighted by a South African delegation visiting Brazil to study agroecology and biotechnology. Amidst tariff pressures from the United States, both countries are seeking greater integration and advocating for global financial reforms to address high debt-servicing costs and strengthen the voice of the Global South in the multilateral system.
