Brazil maternal vaccination rates remain below targets

Overview

Vaccination rates for pregnant women in Brazil continue to fall below the 90% target established by the Ministry of Health. While influenza coverage has shown recent improvement, reaching approximately 76% in preliminary 2026 data, COVID-19 immunization coverage has stagnated at roughly 55%.

These low immunization levels have resulted in documented health complications. Between 2023 and August 2026, at least 286 pregnant or postpartum women developed Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SRAG) due to influenza, leading to 25 deaths. During that same period, COVID-19 caused 205 severe cases and 21 deaths within this demographic.

Medical experts and health officials, including Jarbas Barbosa of the Pan American Health Organization, emphasize that maternal immunization is critical for providing passive immunity to newborns, who cannot receive certain vaccines until they are six months old. The recommended vaccination schedule for pregnant women includes Hepatitis B, dT, influenza, and COVID-19, with dTpa and RSV vaccines also indicated at specific gestational stages.
