In late July, the Public Prosecutor's Office of Goiás filed an appeal to broaden a court‑ordered restructuring of hospital assistance in Goiânia, citing severe deficiencies such as prolonged emergency stays, staff and supply shortages, and misuse of health funds. A week later, municipal authorities in Goiânia and Gurupi announced concrete steps to address the identified problems, including the opening of a new Basic Health Unit in Lorena Park and the launch of the “Opera Gurupi” program to clear elective-surgery waiting lists. Expanding on these regional efforts, Goiás Governor Daniel Vilela announced a major project to transform the Hospital de Urgências de Goiás Dr. Valdemiro Cruz (Hugo) into a specialized women's hospital. This SUS-funded complex will focus on gynecology, obstetrics, and maternity care, including high-risk pregnancies. To accommodate renovations, current Hugo services will move to a new structure in Conjunto Fabiana by January 2027. Once completed, the facility is expected to feature over 400 beds, approximately 90 ICU vacancies, and 20 surgical rooms, nearly doubling its current capacity. Additionally, the governor announced plans to expand the Complexo Oncológico de Referência do Estado de Goiás (Cora) with a new unit dedicated to adult oncology, with designs expected by the end of 2026. Further municipal initiatives have since been launched to expand specialized access. In Goiânia, the “Agora Tem Especialistas” program—a partnership between the Municipal Health Secretariat, the Ministry of Health, and Hospital Santa Maria—allows private hospitals to convert federal debts into medical services for the Unified Health System (SUS), targeting over 620 monthly procedures. Meanwhile, Valparaíso de Goiás launched the “OPERA VAL” program to provide 9,605 specialized consultations, exams, and elective surgeries across nine medical specialties. On a broader scale, the federal “Agora Tem Especialistas” program has formalized R$ 1 billion in credits with 259 institutions across 21 states.
