Brazil organized crime wave expands

Entities: Samuel Morais da Hora · SN Cell Peças, Acessórios e Equipamentos Ltda. · Rio de Janeiro Police Civil · Terceiro Comando Puro (TCP) · Operation Hawala

Overview

The wave of organized property crime that began in early July with coordinated nighttime invasions in São Paulo’s Vila Gomes Cardim district and a vehicle‑rammed robbery of a hardware store in Uberlândia persisted across several states. Subsequent incidents included a residential‑building breach in Santos and a shop burglary in Cambira, Paraná, each captured on security cameras but yielding no immediate arrests.

By late July, authorities in Ivoti, Rio Grande do Sul, intercepted a sophisticated bank robbery attempt at a Banco do Brasil branch. Criminals had excavated a tunnel, concealed it with cardboard barriers, and equipped it with cutting discs, planning to breach the vault after dark. Police surrounded the site, arrested three adults and a 16‑year‑old, and seized the tools and equipment used. Investigators are also probing possible links to a recent robbery in nearby Sapiranga.

In parallel, on 15 July police launched Operation Hawala, uncovering a R$14.8 million money‑laundering scheme tied to Samuel Morais da Hora, a self‑declared autônomo linked to the Terceiro Comando Puro (TCP) faction. Ten suspects were arrested, 37 search warrants executed across Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Foz do Iguaçu, and assets blocked. The scheme used front companies and smurfing deposits, indicating that the same organized networks behind the recent property thefts are also diversifying into financial crime.

Follow‑up reporting on Operation Hawala disclosed that Morais da Hora, a 36‑year‑old businessman, claimed a modest monthly income of R$ 4,000 while prosecutors documented luxury trips to Dubai, Paris and Santorini and ownership of SN Cell Peças, a storefront that moved roughly R$ 14.8 million in nine months through sales of cell‑phone accessories, many counterfeit or stolen. The investigation confirmed the network’s ties to TCP and resulted in the same set of arrests and asset freezes across the four states.
