Brazil retail sector growth trends
Overview
Brazil’s retail sector showed growth throughout the first half of the year. In June, the Stone Retail Index reported a 13.2% year-on-year increase in the state of Roraima, with other northern states also seeing double-digit gains. This surge was partly attributed to higher consumption during the World Cup, particularly in the hypermarket and food-and-beverage segments.
Data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) indicated that overall retail sales grew 0.5% in June, contributing to a 1.9% expansion for the first half of the year. Analysts linked this growth to decelerating inflation and a 1.1% increase in employment. While sectors such as personal items, supermarkets, and furniture saw gains, clothing and books experienced declines. Additionally, the digital retail sector reported record-breaking online sales, with the ‘home and garden’ category remaining a significant revenue generator.
